The engineering feasibility study consists of a detailed analysis of whether the customer supplied specifications for a design can be achieved with a reasonable degree of certainty as presented.
The detailed design customer specifications must include exactly what the design is intended to do, the specific electrical / electronic functions (i.e- inputs/outputs), cost budget parameters, operating environment, packaging & physical form factor, how it will be powered, and the intended product life span/ life cycle including warranty, repair and recycling.
The engineering feasibility study can take many hours depending on complexity of the design and above parameters supplied by the customer. At the end of the feasibility study, a detailed report is generated by the engineer to analyze whether the project is feasible based on the customer’s specifications. At this point, the project may be given the go ahead, adjusted to allow it to be successful with reasonable certainty, or abandoned. All design projects are undertaken by M Squared on a best effort basis and is never 100% guaranteed to meet the exact specification originally supplied. Many times, compromises must be made as the design progresses and more information is known as we progress from concept to final production.
Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)
A programmable logic controller (PLC) is a microprocessor based controller that uses programmable memory to store instructions and to implement functions to control machines and processes. PLCs have: interfacing for inputs and outputs already inside the controller, use a programming language that is primarily concerned with logic and switching operations, and are designed to withstand vibrations, temperature, humidity, and noise. PLCs have the great advantage that the same basic controller can be used with a wide range of control systems.
To modify a control system all that is necessary is for the operator to key in a different set of instructions with no need to rewire. The result is a flexible, cost-effective system that can be used with control systems, which vary quite widely in their nature and complexity.
